چکیده

We have used Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the capabilities of a giant air shower observatory designed to detect showers initiated by cosmic rays with energies exceeding 10 19 eV. The observatory is to consist of an array of detectors that will characterise the air shower at ground level, and optical detectors to measure the uorescence light emitted by the shower in the atmosphere. Using these detectors together in a \hybrid" connguration, we nd that precise geometrical reconstruction of the shower axis is possible, leading to excellent resolution in energy. The technique is also shown to provide very good reconstruction below 10 19 eV, at energies where the ground array is not fully eecient.

Capabilities of A Giant Hybrid Air Shower Detector

Recent reports of superhigh energy cosmic rays beyond the expected spectral cuto have intensiied interest in the unknown origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. There is a need for a much larger data base of more precisely measured air showers. This requires new sensitive detectors of enormous aperture. Combining a ground array of particle counters with an optical detector of atmospheric uore...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE A radio air shower surface detector as an extension for IceCube and IceTop

The IceCube neutrino detector is built into the Antarctic ice sheet at the South Pole to measure high energy neutrinos. For this, 4800 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are being deployed at depths between 1450 and 2450 meters into the ice to measure neutrino induced charged particles like muons. IceTop is a surface air shower detector consisting of 160 Cherenkov ice tanks located on top of IceCube....

Study of the Cosmic Ray Composition above 0.4 EeV using the Longitu- dinal Profiles of Showers observed at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory has been collecting data in a stable manner since January 2004. We present here a study of the cosmic ray composition using events recorded in hybrid mode during the first years of data taking. These are air showers observed by the fluorescence detector as well as the surface detector, so the depth of shower maximum, Xmax, is measured directly. The cosmic ray compos...

Shower Fluorescence Light Profile Derived from CORSIKA

Simulations of optical image of a shower are implemented into a procedure of shower energy determination. This ”top-down” approach starts with shower development and fluorescence light production in the air, to obtain the expected detector response. In this paper, distributions of energy deposited by a shower in the air through ionization, as obtained from CORSIKA, are used to derive the flux o...

Air Shower Simulations in a Hybrid Approach using Cascade Equations

A new hybrid approach to air shower simulations is described. At highest energies, each particle is followed individually using the traditional Monte Carlo method; this initializes a system of cascade equations which are applicable for energies such that the shower is one-dimensional. The cascade equations are solved numerically down to energies at which lateral spreading becomes significant, t...
